One person died and three were reportedly injured during a shooting at Newark’s annual “Blessing of the Bikes” event. The incident took place around 7:45 p.m. near 19th Ave. and S. 16th St. in the South Ward. Immediately after the incident, the crime scene was barricaded. The three victims were treated at a nearby hospital.
On Mother’s Day, thousands of enthusiast motorists gathered outside the Springfield Ave. clubhouse of the Newark Knights MC to participate in the event.
Bikers were performing stunts when all of a sudden, two people open-fired at the bikers in the midst of the crowd. The suspects gunned down four people, resulting in the death of one person. Witnesses informed that the person who died was reportedly a teenager. The exact age of the victims are not yet confirmed by the police.
After visiting the area on Sunday night, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said that a greater number of cops needs to be deployed for such events, but unfortunately, they do not have enough manpower.
“We don’t have enough officers to maintain an event of this magnitude,” Baraka said, as per the WABC. “And so we can’t have events like this until we’re prepared to deal with them.”
“They’ve had this event in the past, and it has not had an incident, but it’s been unruly since then,” Mayor Baraka said. “We know that we are building up more police officers. We hired another 150 this year.”
