At least this is what the store clerk reportedly assumed, because she’s black. According to Zendaya Coleman, a store clerk refused to attend to her because of skin tone and she took to Snapchat on Tuesday to complain about her experience in a series of small videos.
The singer and actress was shown in the video narrating her unpleasant experience to the viewers. She said that she was at the store with a friend to buy gift cards, but the store clerk threw her wallet back to her and declined to serve her.
“So we just got out of this Vons,” she told the camera. “Now I am trying to buy a lot of gift cards.”
She added, “There are certain limits or whatever so you can only by so much. But the lady that was helping us… I don’t think she was a fan of our skin tone.”
She then went on to explain how the store clerk tossed her wallet saying she cannot afford a $400 gift card.
She added, “She literally threw my wallet and she was like ‘you can’t afford this.’ It was $400!”
Following her bitter experience, Zendaya admitted that the world still needs to make so much more progress. However, she later backtracked on one of her earlier claims, saying the store clerk did not exactly throw the wallet but tossed it with her cards still loose and started attending other customers.
However, it was all sorted out at the end as Zendaya and her friend received the assistance that they deserved and she could also buy the gift cards that she was there for. “Yo shout out the manager for coming and helping – I got my gift cards!” she exclaimed.
According to a report by the Hollywood Life, Zendaya has been a victim of racism in 2015, when she was just a teenager. ‘Fashion Police’ host Giuliana Rancic targeted her saying “I feel like she smells like patchouli oil, or maybe weed,” when the singer decided to wear her hair in dreadlocks to the Oscars.
But Zendaya was not the one to take it lying down, and she took to Twitter accusing Rancic of being “ignorant, disrespectful and outrageously offensive.”
