YouTube Elects Turkish Airlines “Messi Vs. Kobe: The Selfie Shootout” As Ad Of The Year
The advertisement from Turkish Airlines featuring football legend Lionel Messi and basketball star Kobe Bryant has been adjudged the ad of the decade by YouTube. The decision came as part of the celebration of the video streaming website’s 10th anniversary.
The 2013 ad “Messi vs. Kobe: The Selfie Shootout,” which shows two of the most renowned celebrities from the world of sports traveling to different countries to outperform the other in a selfie battle, has been seen by 141 million users internationally.
It was created by the agencies Crispin Porter + Bogusky and Starcom, and reemphasizes the tagline of the airline service, which says, “flying to more countries than any other airline.”
Crispin Porter + Bogusky chief executive Andrew Keller said, “‘Selfie Shootout’ had all the right ingredients for success on YouTube – an adventuresome client, two of the most globally well-loved figures in sports, a great idea and a terrific platform to share our work.”
As reported by TIME, although the video wasn’t praised highly by critics, it achieved massive popularity.
Twenty adverts featuring on the website were selected by YouTube. Marketers and advertisers were asked to vote for their favorite.
While Turkish Airline’s “Kobe vs. Messi: The Selfie Shootout” earned the top spot for Ad of the Decade, Volkswagen’s “The Force” came in second. According to The Globe and Mail, “The Force” had been viewed 8 million times before it aired during the 2011 Super Bowl.
