Xbox One Outpaces PS4 in December
Microsoft Corp’s Xbox One was the best-selling videogame console in December, beating out Sony Corp’s PlayStation 4 (PS4). This is according to latest data released by market research company NPD Group. Both consoles were released in the US in November, with PS4 being launched a week ahead than Xbox One. Since then, the two devices have locked in a tight race in terms of supremacy in sales.
In a statement, Liam Callahan, NPD’s analyst, said the two gaming consoles are in a tremendous start. He revealed that Xbox One dominated console sales last month, but PS4’s total sales in the two months since its launch have made it the best-selling videogame console during that two-month launch period.
Meanwhile, the gaming industry emerged as a clear winner in December. It generated total revenue of $3.28 billion from sales of hardware, software, and accessories last month. That was its fifth month in a row of positive sales. Moreover, it translated to a 50% jump in total console sales across the US compared to year-ago figures.
According to NPD, the increase in sales of hardware and accessories last month was sufficient to offset decline in sales of software. Thus, there was a 2% rise in sales from December 2012.
Strong sales of Xbox One and PS4 led to a 28% jump in hardware sales to $1.37 billion. At the same time, accessory spending rose 4% to $631 million. On the other hand, sales of software dropped 17% to $1.28 billion.
However, these numbers represent only the new physical retail sales, which in turn account for about half of overall consumer spending on videogames. It is estimated that rental and used games had a total of $249 million while sales of games in digital format was in $815 million. Total videogame sales in the US were ‘just under’ about $2.4 billion last month alone.
For the entire 2013, sales of new software, hardware, and accessories reached $12.97 billion. That is 2% down from 2012. Nintendo’s 3DS generated the highest sales in hardware units last month and for the whole year. But because Xbox One has a $500 tag price, it was the one that made the biggest money in the year.
For software, the videogame ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ was logically the most popular game of the past year. Just within four months after its release, it was able near breaching sales of ‘Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,’ which is the highest selling videogame in the franchise.
