Tension between Russia and NATO has reached new highs that NATO started amassing troops in preparation for Russian aggression. According to NATO, Russia’s deployment of SAMs is alarming and the United States should take the initiative to become the police of the world.
NATO Alarmed with Russia’s SAMs
“I’m concerned about the fact that these kinds of systems as were mentioned here — the proliferation of those systems — is really expanding, and I think that’s something as not just air forces but as a joint force we need to be concerned about,” Military.com quoted Lt. Gen. Dennis Luyt, commander of the Royal Netherlands Air Force.
The official’s comments were made during the Air Force Association’s annual Air, Space & Cyber conference held outside Washington, D.C. Luyt was part of the panel along with Gen. Tod Wolters, commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe, and Maj. Gen. Max Nielsen, chief of staff of Denmark’s defense command.
According to reports, Russia has deployed S-300 and S-400 surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems in many regions including within Russia and Kaliningrad, Latakia and Syria, among others.
“Russia has altered the security balance in the Black Sea, Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East by establishing large anti-access/area-denial (A2AD) exclusion zones,” added Kathleen Weinberger, a researcher with the Washington, D.C.-based Institute for the Study of War.
US to Become Protector of the World
In response to Russia’s aggression, ex-NATO head Anders Fogh Rasmussen voiced his views on the United States becoming the world’s policeman to “counter autocrats like President [Vladimir] Putin,” according to his commentary on The Wall Street Journal.
According to the official, the United States has the credibility to be a “a policeman to restore order; we need a firefighter to put out the flames of conflict, and a kind of mayor, smart and sensible, to lead the rebuilding.”
