After pushing the Windows 10 upgrade with more effort, Microsoft has come up with a new strategy for Windows 10 Pro. Microsoft now wants you to upgrade your system from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro. To make the process simple, the company is also giving the key for free.

That’s right! Microsoft is giving a free key for Windows 10 Pro so users can upgrade their systems without complications. As I checked my system’s settings, to my surprise, my machine is already running Windows 10 Pro Edition. This can be the result of the “Update and Shut Down” option I get every now and then. Here’s the picture with the key:

Now, in my case, the upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Window 10 Pro was automatic. And the activation status, as you can see above, is “ACTIVATED.” But the key Microsoft is giving for free is not the one that you can see in the above screenshot. If your system is still running the older version and you want to switch to Pro, this is your free product key: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T. But again, Microsoft’s form moderator Charles on the Microsoft Forum wrote,

“From your Windows 10 Home running Version 1511, enter the Windows 10 Pro Default key under change product key. VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T  This default key will not activate the system, just take you to Pro so you can activate using a valid Pro key that you will provide. Once you have done this, the system will go through an upgrade process from Home to Pro, but will not be activated on Pro.  You can now enter your Windows 8 Pro key into your Windows 10 Pro system and it will activate.”

To put into simple words, the free key will upgrade your system without a doubt, but will not activate it. To activate Windows 10 Pro and keep using it, you will have to buy the key. Got the whole “Free Product Key” scenario? According to Beta News, if you want to buy the key for the latest Windows 10, then you will have to go to Settings > Activation Page > Store. Get the key and activate Windows 10 Pro.

A suggestion: If you do not choose “update and shut down” while turning off your system, try this option before using or purchasing the key. You may be in for a surprise.

Considering Microsoft’s Windows 10 history, the company is surely not going to stop here. We will update you about the latest happenings. Keep watching this space for more.
