Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic took care of business in Day 1 of the Wimbledon 2016, defeating their respective foes in straight sets. In Wimbledon 2016 Day 2, it will be Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Serena Williams’ turn to kick off their campaign on a positive note.Advertisement
Serena Williams vs Amra Sadikovic
Serena Williams will try to bounce back from a disappointing campaign in the French Open 2016, where she lost to Garbine Muguruza in the final. In London, the top-seeded American will take on unseeded Amra Sadikovic of Switzerland in the first round at Centre Court starting 8 a.m. ET.
Williams is tipped to cruise to the second round without a hitch. But for Sadikovic, she will enjoy the moment, saying that it will be an honor to play against Williams, who she called the greatest women’s tennis player of all time.
“To me, she was like — I don’t mean it in a bad way — like a monster,” Sadikovic told New York Times. “She’s there, and so confident, that’s how it is. She’s the greatest player ever, so it’s an honor to play her.”
Andy Murray vs Liam Brody
After the Williams-Sadikovic match, Andy Murray will begin his title campaign against compatriot Liam Brody in Wimbledon 2016 Day 2 at Centre Court. The second-seeded Briton is looking to win his third Grand Slam and his second Wimbledon title three years after he took the crown in 2013.
Murray is in great form in recent tournaments despite losing to Djokovic in the French Open 2016 final. The 29-year-old will head into the tournament coming off a successful campaign at the AEGON Championships in London, where he defeated Milos Raonic in the final.
Stan Wawrinka vs Taylor Fritz
Meanwhile, Wawrinka will start his campaign in Wimbledon 2016 against Taylor Fritz at No. 1 court starting 8 a.m. ET. Wawrinka is also expected to cruise to an easy win over the unseeded American. The Swiss tennis superstar made the quarterfinals in the past two years and is confident of his chances this year.
“Quite happy with the way I’m playing so far,” Wawrinka told reporters via the tournament’s official website. “I think I’m ready for the tournament. So excited to start again one more Wimbledon.”
