The NBA is celebrating the forthcoming Chinese New Year with a special TV commercial featuring Jeremy Lin, Stephen Curry and James Harden.
The advertisement titled “Dining Table” shows the trio of NBA stars sharing a New Year meal with a traditional Chinese family. It is being broadcast across all tube stations and digital platforms that are showing basketball games in China. (Watch Video Above)
While Lin is Taiwanese-American, Curry and Harden play for teams with huge fanbases in the far east. The Bay Area, which hosts Curry’s Golden State Warriors, boasts of a huge Chinese population, too.
In recent years, Warriors began honoring its Asian fanbase in more ways than one. Besides annual Chinese New Year celebrations, the Warriors also celebrate Filipino Heritage Night.
After drafting Yao Ming in 2002, the Rockets became the first team to wear special Chinese New Year jerseys. Rockets will wear their Chinese New Year jerseys in three games between February 6 and 9.
Wizards to launch special jerseys
In a first, the Washington Wizards will also join in the celebrations. They will wear specially designed Chinese New Year Jerseys on February 3 against the Golden State Warriors in a home game.
The NBA will celebrate Chinese New Year between February 3 and 21 with millions of fans in China, the U.S. and around the globe. Other teams, besides the aforementioned ones, will also celebrate the holiday week and pay tribute to Chinese culture.
In another first, a total of 51 games will be broadcast or steamed in China, showcasing all 30 NBA teams. Typically, there are only 2-3 televised games in China on one given day.
The TV spot will run until February 22.
Last year, the NBA did a similar spot that featured Jeremy Lin, Harden, Curry and Dwayne Wade. The Chinese New Year is February 8 and celebrates the Year Of The Monkey.
