The video of the elderly couple crying while saying goodbye went viral. What is in it that has gotten its viewers emotional? What is the background of the clip?
When their granddaughter uploaded their photo online, it immediately got the attention of many as it was shared more than 7,000 times.
“This is the saddest photo I have taken,” Ashley Bartyik captioned her Facebook image. “This is my Omi and my Opi.”
She narrated how disheartening it is to see her grannies separate ways after being married for 62 years.
In an interview with CNN, Bartyik shared the story behind the photograph of the elderly couple who were saying goodbye to each other. “It’s an emotional outburst from both of them,” she said.
According to her, the couple, Wolf and Anita Gottschalk of Surrey, B.C., has been admitted in separate nursing home. Thus, for them to see each other every other day, their 29-year-old granddaughter or another family member, drives the 40 minutes distance to bring them together. This has been the scenario for eight months now.
Behind this situation is a much deeper story to tell.
CNN reported that Wolf was placed into Yale Road Centre in January following his congestive heart failure, while his wife stays in the facility, which is 40 minutes away. While their granddaughter only wanted their story to gain the attention of the local community, it has reached even the other countries.
“It’s been a waiting game to get him placed,” Bartyik said, adding that they have been asking Fraser Health to reunite the couple. “We want justice for my grandparents who after 62 years together deserve to spend their last moments in the same building.”
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Fraser stated that they are “committed” to finally bring them together since the condition is also “heartbreaking” and “quite upsetting” for them as well.
