Many Americans might think that Iraqis are grateful for U.S.’ intervention in Iraq and in fighting their enemies for them, but that’s not necessarily the case. It is because at least four out of 10 Iraqis believe that the United States of America purposely supports the notorious terrorist group ISIS.
According to a “sensitive but unclassified” report from the U.S. State Department polling, which was contained in the recently released State Inspector General report, 40 percent of Iraqis see the U.S. as the one behind the terrorist group.
The group ISIS has been implicated in various terror attacks in different parts of the world – most of which the group has since claimed responsibility of. The group has beheaded some of hostages they held captive, even videotaping the actual beheadings.
From 38 percent in December 2014, the perception of Iraqis about America has plummeted to 18 percent on December 2015. The figures are even worse for Sunni Arabs, where it plunged to 10 percent from 54 percent.
What’s so peculiar about the report is that despite the effort the U.S. government has been exerting in the region over the past years, let alone the billions of resources to ensure peace in the area, Iraqis think the Americans are responsible for the chaos happening in their country, particularly on terrorism. According to estimates from war experts, the U.S. government has spent $1.6 trillion of taxpayers’ money in Afghanistan and Iraq wars, TIME reported.
“About half of Iraqi Sunnis and Shia now say that they completely oppose the Coalition. Opposition among the Kurds has remained low and stable, at around 6 percent. Department polling shows that nearly all Iraqis have unfavorable views of [ISIS] and oppose its goals and tactics, with no significant variation across religious sects and ethnic groups,” the report stated.
The report also showed that some Iraqis believe the United States is responsible for chaos happening in the country. It was even revealed that they believe U.S. forces are there in their country to exploits resources.
