Two Boys Killed After Being Hit By Suspected Drugged SUV Driver
Two teenage boys were killed and two were injured Wednesday when a driver, suspected to be on drugs, hit them on the sidewalk near Ferndale.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Mark Francis said those killed were identified as Shane Ormiston, 18, and Gabriel Anderson, 15.
Francis said that 30 students from Windward High School were taking a walk outside as part of their physical education exercise. They were supervised by a teacher.
Michael A. Brewster and Kole A. Randall, both of 17 years, suffered severe injuries to their legs and were initially taken to St. Joseph hospital for treatment. However, Brewster was later transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle by an ambulance. As of Wednesday morning, both were in serious condition, as reported by The Bellingham Herald.
The 34-year-old driver, identified as William Klein, has been arrested and faces two counts of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.
As reported by the Daily News, Francis said that Klein “made a statement early on that he fell asleep behind the wheel.”
Francis further said that an investigation will ascertain whether Klein was on drugs or had consumed alcohol.
One of the nearby residents, describing the scene of the accident as an absolute chaos, said, “We went running out and there was just bodies everywhere, so we didn’t know which one to go to. Finally more people started coming and we got blankets and we knew right away… two of them were not moving,” as reported by King5 News.
Lynnette Delamare was eating lunch with her husband, Scott, when she heard three of four crashes from the street.
“It sounded like the impact of a couple of cars hitting,” she said.
Windward’s campus is located east, about a quarter mile, of the crash site.
A community gathering was held on Wednesday at Good News Fellowship Church. Grief counselors were present to talk to parents and students.
