Couple killed due to strong winds in Northeast


A couple was killed and several people were left without electricity after snow, rain and wind struck the Northeast on Sunday. According to FOX News, the couple, Manuela and Franklin Teixeira, were driving in Abington, Massachusetts, when a tree fell on their vehicle. As of Sunday, as many as 29000 people were left without power.

Wind gusts reaching as high as 45 miles per hour struck Manhattan’s Central Park, while Kennedy Airport witnessed winds reaching 64 miles per hour.

Austin officer shot is alive and recovering

An Austin officer was shot in an incident near the intersection of West 6th Street and West Avenue on Sunday. As reported by WFAA, the officer was shot in the lower right abdomen below his bulletproof vest. Immediately thereafter, he was taken to the University Medical Center Brackenridge.

Following surgery, the bullet was successfully removed from the officer’s body. The name of the officer will be released on Monday, Austin police said.

World Cup soccer player Abby Wambach arrested in Oregon

Soccer champion Abby Wambach was arrested in Oregon on grounds of driving under influence. The retired player, who has 184 goals to her name and was part of the U.S. women’s team for 15 years before her retirement in December, was stopped after she ran a red light near downtown, Inquirer reports.

Wambach failed the field sobriety test and a breath test at the precinct. According to the police, Wambach was “polite and cooperative throughout the investigation.”

Man who almost fell off the cliff hit by tour bus

A driver who escaped his vehicle after it was about to fall off a cliff was struck by a tour bus. On Saturday, Silviano Gonzalez Ramirez lost control of his car on Malibu Canyon Road, which ended up dangling off a cliff, ABC News reports. After the driver got out of his car, he was hit by a tour bus. Conscious and breathing, he was transported to the hospital. The incident remains under investigation.

Taylor Swift gives special shout out to Calvin Harris at iHeartMusic Awards

While accepting the award for best tour at the 2016 iHeartMusic Awards on Sunday, Taylor Swift gave a special mention to boyfriend Calvin Harris. In addition to the best tour award for her massively popular album “1989,” Swift also won best female artist of the year. The pop sensation has won a whopping 250 awards to date and has as many as five records in the Guinness Book of Records to her name, People reports.

Batman V Superman drops 68 percent in second weekend

“Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice” dropped 68 percent in its second weekend in cinemas, NBC News reports. Over the weekend, the superhero saga collected $52.4 million. To date, it has earned $261.5 million.

In comparison to other superhero movies, Zack Snyder’s prequel to Batman V Superman, “Man of Steel,” dropped by 64.6 percent in its second weekend; Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises” saw a drop of 61.4 percent in its second weekend.

Chihuahua leads police on chase

A chihuahua, chased by the police as it sped across the Oakland San Francisco Bay Bridge, is now in animal custody, CBS News reports. The dog, tailed by a motorcycle officer, “led us on quite a chase,” California Highway Patrol said in a tweet. Once it was brought back to the shelter, the members of staff named the dog Ponch – after Officer Frank Poncherello played by Erik Estrada in television series “CHiPs.”
