North Carolina sued by US over bathroom law


North Carolina was sued over its bathroom law on Monday by the U.S. Justice Department, as reported by St. Louis Post Dispatch. U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, speaking about the state’s bathroom law – according to which people can only visit bathrooms and showers that correspond to the gender on their birth certificate – gives rise to “state sponsored discrimination.”

Record setting firearm related background checks in the last year

According to a report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, there have been more background checks related to firearms every month in the last year, as reported by the Daily Caller. As many as 25.6 million checks – including for forearm acquisition and forearm purchase permits among others – were carried out from a period of May 2015 until April 2016.

Ferguson appoints news police chief

Delrish Moss, from the Miami police, became Ferguson’s first black permanent police chief on Monday, as reported by the Huffington Post. Previously a major in Miami, Moss will he heading the department which has in the past been accused of racial bias. In 2014, black teenager Michael Brown was killed by a white Ferguson police officer. The department has also been accused of ticketing residents to raise revenue.

Jon Stewart: Donald Trump is a “man baby”

In a live recording of David Axelrod’s podcast, former The Daily Show host Jon Stewart referred to business mogul Donald Trump as a “man baby.” Stewart also said that he wasn’t sure if Trump was eligible as president, as reported by Entertainment Tonight.

“It’s not a birther thing; I’m not a constitutional scholar, so I can’t necessarily say, but are you eligible to run if you are a man-baby, or a baby-man?” Stewart said. “I’m not here to be politically incorrect. … He is a man-baby. He has the physical countenance of a man, and a baby’s temperament and hands.”

Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes welcome second daughter

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes had their second daughter, People reports. Amada Lee Gosling was born on April 29 in Santa Monica, California. The couple, who began dating in 2011, have another daughter, Esmeralda Amada, 20 months old. Speaking with People, a friend said that Mendes is “content with her partner. She finally found the person she really wants to be with.”
