Is Tommy Chong dead? Fans are wondering if the news about the popular “Cheech & Chong” star’s passing is true after a post went viral on Facebook.
The viral post created speculation that Chong committed suicide, but the link from Viral Time Lapse indicated that the actor lost his battle with cancer at 77 years old. The post asked the fans to pay their last respect to the Canadian-American actor and director.
“He will be missed but not forgotten,” the Facebook posted indicated. “Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page.”
However, clicking the link to the said report will lead to a dubious request to like a Facebook page. To keep you safe, we will not post the link to the said post, but we provided a screenshot of the said Facebook report below.
But is the Tommy Chong dead report true? According to Snopes, the news about his death is false. The website pointed out that the Viral Time Lapse also posted the same report back in December 2015 and March 2016.
But to gain more attention or possibly take information from careless users, the report was revived on Wednesday. Based on how it went viral even as of posting time, it appears that there are still Facebook users who were fooled by the said report.
Snopes insisted that the Tommy Chong dead reports are nothing new and it was just a product of malicious minds. Snopes is the same website that debunked recent death hoax involving Angelina Jolie, Sylvester Stallone, Jaden Smith, John Cena and other popular celebrities.
“That account was a hoax, and the clickbait Viral Time Lapse published the same false article again March 2016 and yet again in August 2016,” Snopes insisted. “The comedian remains alive and well.”
To prove their claim, Snopes reported that Chong is very active on social media. The 78-year-old actor recently posted updates on his official Facebook and Twitter accounts. So for fans who will see the Tommy Chong dead reports on Facebook, just ignore it because the Cheech & Chong icon is still alive.
