Tianna Bartoletta won the gold in women’s long jump event on Wednesday. She leaped a personal best of 7.17m and defeated the reigning Brittney Reese.
To know a little more about the track and field star, the Tampa-based 30-year-old belongs to Team USA. Known as Tianna Madison previously, she changed her name to the Bartoletta after she married John Bartoletta. She won gold medal in the women’s long jump at Rio 2016 Olympics.
The athlete gives full credit to her husband for “reinvigorating her passion for the track.” John Bartoletta is an investment banker whom Tianna married in 2012 after participating in London 2012, Hollywoodlife reports.
Tianna Bartoletta broke the world record in the 4x100m relay at the London Games. She is the fifth athlete to win Olympic titles in the long jump and 4x100m relay, joining Jesse Owens, Heide Rosendahl, Carl Lewis and Brittney Reese.
Let’s take a look at how Tianna Bartoletta met her husband John:
Tianna moved from Los Angeles to Orlando to train with coach Caryl Smith Gilbert. After failing to qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, luck had something else in store for Tianna.
She had a chance meeting with her future husband John Bartoletta at a restaurant. They kept talking for three hours.
Tianna and John had a heart to heart that “contained hard, honest truths” which changed the course of her life.
“I believed what he was saying and believed him enough to believe in myself, and that was kind of the start of the whole new track and field journey. But it also was the foundation of our relationship, which is believe in each other,” said Tianna Bartoletta, talking to Tampa Bay Times in 2013.
The down to earth athlete celebrated her gold in London 2012 with her husband by buying potato chips and Magnum ice-creams from a convenience store near their house, and then watching the latest Harry Potter movie.
Besides, the humble Tianna always commends her hard-working competitors. Her favorite food is pizza, according to USA Sports.
