What's This?

dalailama1 The Dalai Lama Joins Instagram as He Continues Foray into Social MediaHis Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama continues on his foray into the modern social media. He has just joined Instagram, the photo-sharing Website owned and operated by social networking site Facebook. This makes him the latest popular personality who has joined the network.

On February 27, the Dalai Lama used his own Twitter account to announce that he just joined Instagram. In that tweet, he instructed the readers to check out and follow his official Instagram account, which is found at

That announcement certainly reached millions of Twitter users. It should be noted that the Dalai Lama currently has about 8.5 million followers on the microblogging site. Many of those followers even retweeted the message, logically spreading it further across the online media.

It is not surprising that in just a span of about two hours, the new Instagram account had obtained more than 10,000 followers. The volume of those followers is expected to further rise as days go on.

The Dalai Lama’s Instagram account

The Instagram account of the Dalai Lama is an indication that the Tibetan spiritual leader is now more open to reaching out to more people across the world. It is also notable how he opts to use modern technology in doing so.

In reports that followed the announcement, the Dalai Lama has already posted about 16 photographs in the new Instagram account. Most of those images include pictures with other famous personalities like US President Barack Obama and TV host Larry King.

The announcement of the Dalai Lama’s Instagram account came about a week following his official visit to the US. In that trip, he was warmly welcomes by Obama into the White House.

Not going to be okay with China

That meeting between the US President and the Dalai Lama has drawn sharp criticisms especially from pro-China parties. They noted that the gesture may possibly add to the strains in the relations between Beijing and Washington. That is because the Tibetan spiritual leader is still considered as a separatist by mainland China.

It is not odd for world leaders like the Dalai Lama to create and maintain accounts on popular social media. Among the most preferred social networks by them are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. It could be recalled that even Pope Francis is actively making posts in his Facebook and Twitter accounts to reach out to more Catholics worldwide.
