The Tesla team is proud of its own Bioweapon Defense Mode. So proud, in fact, that they were willing to put it through a test.

Tesla is first to admit that air pollution is a real problem. Tesla’s research reveal that more than three million people die from air pollution per year. That is more than twice the number of casualties from vehicle accidents. Moreover, the World Health Organization believes that air pollution is possibly “the world’s largest single environmental health risk.” This is why Tesla developed a way for both Model S and Model X to combat pollution effectively.

The Tesla team said that their idea was inspired by air filtration systems used in hospitals, clean rooms and even the space industry. Through these, Tesla developed its own HEPA filtration system that can effectively strip the outside air of several unwanted particles such as pollen, bacteria and pollution.

At the same time, the system scrubs the air inside the cabin clean to make sure the ride will be completely free of air pollution. The result? Tesla drivers and passengers get “the best possible cabin air quality no matter what is happening in the environment around them.”

Just to be sure that Tesla’s air protection system would hold, the company gladly put their technology to tests in various real-world environments, including marches, cow pastures, busy California freeways and various cities in China. In all of these environments, the HEPA system managed to capture every particulate matter as well as gaseous pollutants.

And because Tesla wanted to make sure that their system works even in the event of harsher environmental situations, they decided close up the Model X falcon doors and engage its Bioweapon Defense mode. During the test, the Model X was placed inside a large bubble contaminated with “extreme levels of pollution,” about “1,000 µg/m3 of PM2.5 vs. the EPA’s “good” air quality index limit of 12 µg/m3.”

The result was impressive. It took the HEPA filtration system less than two minutes to scrub the vehicle’s cabin air clean and even brought the pollution level to “undetectable.” Meanwhile, Tesla’s tech also cleansed the air outside the car, bringing pollution levels down by 40 percent.

With a proven Bioweapon Defense Mode, Tesla confidently said, “You can literally survive a military grade bio attack by sitting in your car.”
