A teen is accused of throwing her newborn baby out of a second story apartment in Omaha.
Antonia Lopez was charged as an adult with felony child abuse resulting in death.
According to Omaha police officials, the child died after falling from the second story apartment window. No further information concerning the child has been released.
Antonia Lopez child wasn’t stillborn
“The child wasn’t a stillborn,” Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said, as reported by Omaha World Herald. “To be booked on that count, the child would have had to have been born alive.”
Police said in a release that Lopez went into labor and threw her baby soon after delivering. Upon arrival the paramedics discovered the baby’s grandmother administering CPR to the child in the parking lot of the apartment complex.
“The child was transported to Creighton University Medical Center, the child has died,” Lt. Mark Desler said, as reported by KETV. The 16-year-old teen also was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
The Omaha World Herald reports the baby is this year’s 19th criminal killing victim in Omaha.
Antonia Lopez grandfather stunned by incident
“It’s caught me by surprise. I just can’t believe it,” John Barcelona, Lopez’s grandfather, said.
Barcelona said he was “stunned” over what happened and was not aware his granddaughter was pregnant.
“She looked like she was well underweight more than anything else, I would’ve never dreamed that she was pregnant,” Barcelona said. “In my head, I just can’t believe it, I can’t believe it.”
Neighbor Mark Nelson said he felt “very disturbed” following the incident. Speaking about the family, Nelson said they “looked like a normal family, say hi, keep to their self.”
The motive behind the horrifying incident has not been made clear.
