Steven Spielberg Taps Tye Sheridan For ‘Ready Player One’ Lead Role
Steven Spielberg, one of the founding pioneers of the New Hollywood era, has found the leading man for his upcoming adaptation of Ready Player One. After months of searching, director Spielberg got on board Tye Sheridan for the role of the movie’s protagonist, Wade.Advertisement
The 19-year-old Sheridan made his debut in the 2011 Terrence Malick film “The Tree Of Life.” The actor has earned accolades for his roles in films like “The Stanford Prison Experiment” and “Mud.” However, Sheridan will undoubtedly be more familiar to audiences when he portrays Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse in May 2016.
In Ready Player One, Tye Sheridan joins English actress Olivia Cooke and Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn.
Ready Player One is an adaptation of Ernest Cline’s 2011 best-selling dystopian sci-fi novel, and the movie is set in virtual world Oasis, in which a teenager finds himself a challenger in a treasure hunt against ruthless competitors after the game’s founder dies and his fortune becomes the grand prize.
However, the casting of Tye Sheridan comes after numerous waves of searches dating back to the fall of 2015. Steven Spielberg was never quite happy even after hopping across several continents for the lead role.
Ready Player One will be produced by Steven Spielberg along with Donald De Line of De Line Pictures, Dan Farah, and Kristie Macosko Krieger (Spielberg’s long-time collaborator). Daniel Lupi and Bruce Berman will serve as executive producers.
Ready Player One is currently in pre-production with a slated release date of March 30, 2018.
