The rebel fighter has finally come to light. Recent Star Wars: Rogue One cast, release date and teasers revealed the true identity of Forest Whitaker’s character in the upcoming film, which is set to come out in December.
Whitaker will be playing the role of Saw Gerrera, a rebel fighter who once fought beside Anakin Skywalker before he became Darth Vader, EW reported. Saw Gerrera was first spotted in The Clone Wars season 5 animated series. He was portrayed as a young rebel in planet Onderson, leading the guerrilla combat against the droid army of Separatists.
Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera will play an important role in the movie, as his character’s history is well connected to Anakin, Obi-Wan Kenobi and the padawan Ahsoka Tano. They all once trained him while he was a part of an insurgent group along with his sister Steela.
In terms of character appearance, Saw Gerrera from the animated series had lesser hair and a different eye color, while in Star Wars: Rogue One, Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera looks much battle torn with normal brown eyes. Moreover, compared to the initial trailer of Rogue One, Whitaker’s appearance is different, as he was shown with a shaved head. But in the new teaser Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera has more hair.
Whitaker’s identity was kept a secret for a long time by Lucasfilm. However, the unveiling of his character has also brought new information to light. It was also confirmed that character missed by Star Wars fans will return. Darth Vader is Back, Gamezone reported.
It would seem technically right for Star Wars: Rogue One to feature the Sith lord, as the movie takes place during the events of 1977’s Star Wars. Moreover, the storyline is also about the first rebel crew who successfully infiltrated the Death Star and stole the plans to lead to its destruction.
