A new “Star Trek” series is currently under way and although “Hannibal” has ended, showrunner Ben Fuller is in for the next sci-fi phenomenon to hit CBS. The reboot series will feature new characters along with new civilizations. The release date has been revealed.
Last year, Fuller regretfully claimed that “Hannibal” will not be back for another season this year. However, the showrunner couldn’t be happier when he has something new to work on – an upcoming reboot of “Star Trek,” a series that will air on CBS.
As reported by Variety, Fuller initially relayed his love for the Star Trek franchise, especially when he wrote “Star Trek: Voyager,” which ran from 1997-2001. He said, “My very first experience of ‘Star Trek’ is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the ‘Star Trek’ universe lit my imagination on fire.”
He added, “It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of ‘Star Trek’ with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no ‘Star Trek’ series has gone before.”
The show’s official executive producer, Alex Kurtzman, echoed Fuller’s devotion to the franchise and said, “Bringing ‘Star Trek’ back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan’s devoted care. His encyclopedic knowledge of ‘Trek’ canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds.”
The plot of the upcoming series is reported to be focused on showcasing new civilizations and introducing fresh characters. Furthermore, it was reported that these new additions would be different from what fans have seen from the movies and previous series of the franchise.
In other news, Slash Film reports that the “Star Trek” series will premiere on CBS this January 2017 before it will be categorized under CBS’ All Access digital subscription service.
“Star Trek” series may still be a year from release, but fans of the franchise can “Star Trek Beyond” on theaters on July 22, 2016.
