Police Chief William Anderson talked to the press in a media briefing. There, he said that an off-duty officer from another jurisdiction stopped and shot the suspect dead on Saturday night inside Crossroads Center.
“We are currently investigating this as a potential act of terrorism,” said Richard Thornton from the FBI. He did not say whether the attacker was linked to a specific terror group. “We don’t know if the suspect was in contact with or inspired by foreign terrorist organizations.”
However, hours after the stabbing, a news agency that spoke for ISIL claimed credit for the mall stabbing.
“The executor of the stabbing attacks in Minnesota yesterday was a soldier of the Islamic State and carried out the operation in response to the citizens of countries belonging to the crusader coalition,” according to the AMAQ news agency.
According to another report by Star Tribune, the St. Cloud’s Mall stabbing attack by the 22-year-old immigrant resonated ISIL’s response to killings in San Bernardino late last year. It mirrored the latest instance of terrorism in Europe, said Thomas Joscelyn, a counterterrorism analyst.
The suspect’s social media accounts and other contacts are being investigated by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. They are looking at see if the evidence could throw light on the attacker’s motivation.
The attacker’s father, Ahmed Adan, was interviewed through a translator from his apartment in St. Cloud on Sunday. Ahmed said his son was born in Kenya but was brought up in the United States. Other family members said 22-year-old Dahir was about to start his third year as a student at St. Cloud State University.
