Sixers Rumors: Harrison Barnes, Dion Waiters Top Targets
The Philadelphia 76ers are hoping to sign restricted free agents Harrison Barnes and Dion Waiters this offseason, according to a source close to the organization.Advertisement
The Golden State Warriors and Oklahoma City Thunder are unlikely to match max offer sheets for Barnes and Waiters, respectively, unless both teams strike out in their pursuit of signing Kevin Durnat or other marquee free agents.
Warriors unlikely to match offer sheet…
According to Marc Stein and Marc J. Spears, “Sources told ESPN.com that the Sixers have Barnes high on their list of potential targets and know the Warriors will not be able to retain him — despite their right to match any offer Barnes gets — if Golden State manages to win the Kevin Durant sweepstakes.”
It’s worth noting that the Los Angeles Lakers are also hoping to land Barnes in the event that Warriors sign Durant. On Tuesday, Chris Brossard reported that Barnes sits atop the Lakers’ wish list as they enter free agency loaded with approximately $65 million in cap space.
If Barnes were to sign an offer sheet by July 8, the Warriors would have three days to match the offer or risk losing the three-and-D specialist. On July 8, the league’s moratorium on signings and trades would be officially lifted. But sources indicate that the Warriors could reach a decision sooner, especially if they win Durant over during their meeting this weekend.

Harrison Barnes set for major pay day
Barnes’ four-year max contract would cost a team in excess of $90 million. According to Spears, “it is also conceivable that Philadelphia and Golden State could strike a sign-and-trade arrangement if the Sixers sign Barnes to an offer sheet and the Warriors decide not to match.”
Meanwhile, Michael Scotto of Sheridan Hoops reported that Sixers are keen to recruit Oklahoma City Thunder guard Dion Waiters. The Thunder are not expected to match lucrative offer sheets for Waiters, especially in the aftermath of trading for Victor Oladipo last week.
Waiters, a native of Philadelphia, averaged 9.8 points from 27 minutes last season.
Harrison Barnes and Dion Waiters would be significant free agency acquisitions for the Sixers, who have been almost inactive in the past few offseasons.
