Will Shailene Woodley face jail? The 24-year-old star is scheduled to appear before the court in Mandan, North Dakota on Monday, Oct.24.
The “Snowden” actress was arrested on charges of criminal trespass and riot while protesting against the Dakota Access pipeline. Shailene Woodley and 26 other activists were on Monday.
The “Divergent” series star livestreamed her protest on Facebook. Shailene and other activists were doing a “peaceful protest” in Sioux County, North Dakota when they were arrested.
About 100 protesters were on a construction site for the controversial pipeline project. Cops then moved in and put handcuffs on Shailene and other activists.
The planned pipeline will affect the sacred Standing Rock Sioux land and burial grounds. A Federal appeals court on Sunday rejected their request to stop the construction as a result the protest took place.
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe want construction of the $3.8 billion pipeline halted. According to them, construction could taint water supply and encroach on tribal burial sites.
Protests supporting the tribe have been going on for months. The Native American tribes believe the pipeline would also damage historic sites.
“The pipeline will run 1,168 miles through North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois. Energy Transport Partners, the company behind the project, has said it will boost local economies and is safer than transporting oil by rail or road,” BBC reports.
But environmental protesters believe the transporting of up to 570,000 barrels of crude oil a day will imperil local waterways. Meanwhile, Shailene Woodley could face 60 days in jail and $3,000 in fines if she is convicted of criminal trespass and engaging in a riot, Page Six reports.
In the Facebook Live footage, Shailene Woodley said that she was walking peacefully back to her vehicle when “they grabbed me by my jacket and said that I wasn’t allowed to continue… and they have giant guns and batons and zip ties and they are not letting me go.”
The actress said that she had been singled out from hundreds of other protesters “because I’m well known, because I have 40,000 people watching.” The video went viral and has been watched 4.3 million times till the time of writing.
