The San Francisco 49ers are facing some tough decision to make heading into the 2016 NFL season. Will star quarterback Colin Kaepernick regain his form or will his previous trade request be granted?
Colin Kaepernick trade rumors floated anew after reports suggest that Blaine Gabbert could be named starter in 2016 NFL Week 1. Adding fuel to the fire, the 49ers added another quarterback to their roster in Christian Ponder, the team announced in a statement.
Ponder’s arrival was linked to Thad Lewis’ unavailability for next season after sustaining a torn ACL on Sunday against the Houston Texans. However, it also fueled more speculation about Kaep’s future in San Francisco.
Kaepernick Losing San Francisco 49ers Starting Job?
Kaepernick is a clear-cut favorite in the 49ers QB race — at least on paper. However, the 28-year-old is struggling to get in shape and is still dealing with arm fatigue.
With Kaepernick struggling to regain his old form, Gabbert is expected to get more reps in their upcoming preseason matches. Jeff Driskel could also get his chance, while Ponder, a former first-round pick and starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, could get a new lease of life in the league.
Shape Up Or Ship Out?
The 49ers have remained firm on their stance that they want to keep Kaepernick in San Francisco. However, it remains to be seen whether or not his current health status will change the Niners’ view.
It is worth noting that Kaepernick previously asked the 49ers to trade him. The veteran quarterback was slowed down by injuries and surgeries over the past several months. He was also benched halfway through last season following a poor 2-6 start for the 49ers, ESPN reported.
As it stands, Kaepernick will have to get in shape quick if he wants to keep his job in San Francisco. While he is open to a trade, it remains to be seen whether or not teams will take a gamble on him with less than a month before the new season begins.
