Samsung Launches Curbed Smartphone ‘Galaxy Round’ in South Korea
Samsung Electronics has introduced a curved smartphone in South Korea. The device is called Galaxy Round, which as the name suggests features rounded sides. It has the size of a typical phablet: 5.7 inches of Full HD Super Flexible AMOLED display.
Galaxy Round would be released through SK Telecom. As of this writing, the world’s biggest handset manufacturer is yet to announce any plan to release it into the international market. But Galaxy enthusiasts hope it would also debut in other countries especially if it becomes a massive success in its home market.
In the past month, Samsung announced plans to launch in Seoul a curbed smartphone this month. Thus, the unveiling of Galaxy Round could be considered as fulfillment of that commitment. The device also altered rival LG Electronics claims that it would release the first flexible OLED smartphone panel in the world.
Galaxy Round could possibly be rocked back and forth while it lies on a flat surface. Because its owners could gently rock it to one side or the other (Roll Effect), the device could be compared to the active display of Google Inc’s Moto X.
However, the Galaxy Round may not be actually bent back and forth. This way, it is still different than the ‘Youm’ prototype of flexible display that Samsung demonstrated in the recent CES 2013. But still, it could be a unique phone. Some skeptics even describe it as a novelty.
As expected, Samsung worked hard to bring in unique and impressive figures to Galaxy Round. First, the device operates on Android 4.3 so that it could eventually be paired with the company’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The internal storage is at 32GB while random access memory is at 3GB. The memory could be expanded to 64GB through micro SD.
It has 13 megapixels of camera at its rear. The front-facing camera has 2 megapixels. As expected, the common camera features that are inherent in Samsung phones are present. It has Drama Shoot, Animated Photo, Best Photo, Eraser, Sound & Shot, Beauty Face, and Live Effect, among others.
More interestingly, Galaxy Round facilitates faster and easier access. It supports Air View and Air Gesture to enable users to experience hands-free previewing of emails, texts, and other features. It even integrates single-handed operation features so that specific controls are strategically positioned on a side of the handset’s screen.
