Cat Zingano will be returning to action since stepping out of the limelight in 2014. She will be facing Julianna Pena in a women’s bantamweight card at UFC 200 where a win could properly place her back on track.
The last time Zingano took the Octagon was against former UFC Women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. She lost to “Rowdy” in just 14 seconds and has since been looking for a rematch. That could materialize if she pulls out a win over the “Venezuelan Vixen.”
Zingano is not making excuses for that 2014 loss to Rousey, but it was obvious that she was mentally bothered. She had suffered from the suicide death of her estranged husband Mauricio.
Since then she has been out of the spotlight as she took care of his son, Brayden. But the time-off seems to have done her good as she now looks for a rebirth.
Next match against who?
As far as Zingano is concerned, there are questions cropping up on how prepared she is against Pena. Pena is coming off a big win over Jessica Eye at UFC 192 and from all indications, she is better prepared compared to Zingano.
Then again, Zingano has been working hard as well in training as of late, as she tries to manage her time. All that will be answered when she and Pena square off this Saturday.
Assuming she does win over Pena, who will Zingano target next? Will she go for the rematch or the title?
Zingano has been aching for payback against Rousey, but the problem is “Rowdy” is indisposed. And even if she does return, the UFC has already stated that Rousey will face the reigning UFC women’s bantamweight champion.
If Rousey holds out, Zingano could make a case and step up to the plate. She defeated Miesha Tate before (2013) but a lot has changed since then.
If not Rousey or Tate, a looming opponent could be Cris “Cyborg” Justino. The Invicta FC champion also has her eyes on Rousey. But with no clarity on whether the former women’s champ is indeed returning, a fight with Zingano could also be possible.
Before going that far, Zingano needs to take care of business and that is to pull off an important win over the unpredictable Pena.
