Rodner Figueroa Sacked Over Michelle Obama ‘Apes’ Comment
Univision has fired Rodner Figueroa over a racist comment aimed at U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama. In a statement, the broadcasting TV network said Figueroa’s comments were completely reprehensible and “in no way reflect the values or opinions of Univision.”
Figueroa, a Daytime Emmy Award recipient in 2014 and talk show host of “El Gordo y la Flaca,” remarked how Mrs Obama seems to look like someone from “Planet of the Apes.” He had been with Univision for 17 years and had been hosting the show since 2000.
On Wednesday, the hosts of the show were talking about makeup artist and TV host Paolo Ballesteros, who can transform himself into different celebrities using creative makeup application. The artist was shown transformed as Mrs Obama.
“Well, watch out, you know that Michelle Obama looks like she’s from the cast of Planet of the Apes, the movie,” Figueroa said, as reported by OnPolitics.
In a statement from Univision, the company announced the immediate termination of Figueroa.
“Yesterday during our entertainment program ‘El Gordo y La Flaca’ Rodner Figueroa made no comments regarding First Lady Michelle Obama that were completely reprehensible and in no way reflect Univision’s values or views. As a result, Mr Figueroa was immediately terminated,” the network said in the statement.
