Rita Maze helplessly dialed her cellphone from the trunk of her Pontiac while her abductor was driving her east.
On Tuesday, Maze was carjacked at a Montana highway rest stop between Great Falls and Helena.
While held captive, Maze made multiple calls to 911. After that, she managed to have a conversation for almost ten minutes that night with her husband Bob and daughter Rochelle, according to LA Times. She was discovered dead in the trunk of her car near Spokane Airport, according to the Spokane County Medical Examiner. She died of a single gunshot wound.
“I told her that I loved her, and my dad told her that he loved her, and she said that she loved us, and then the phone shut off,” Rochelle Maze told reporters.
“If anyone ever asked her for anything at all, from money to anything, she would give them the shirt off of her back.”
Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies reported that the mother had gone up to 500 miles through Interstate 90 inside the trunk for almost 12 hours. According to KREM 2, officials reported that Maze was abducted from a rest stop near Wolf Creek, Montana as she was on her way from Helena to Great Falls.
