The USA men’s basketball team will officially kick off their title defense on Saturday when they face China in Day 1 of the 2016 Rio Olympics Basketball men’s competition at Carioca 1 Arena in Brazil.Advertisement
Team USA are missing the biggest names in basketball like Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James and Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry. However, USA Basketball are still tipped to go all the way and capture the gold medal in the quadrennial event.
Leading the team this year is New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony, the most senior player in the squad. The high-scoring forward will be playing in his fourth Olympics and will look to win the third Olympic gold medal of his illustrious basketball career.
“I get a chance to go out there, be the leader of the team and enjoy it,” Anthony told USA Today in July. “It’s about going over there having fun, getting the winning feeling back and trying to get another gold medal.”
Worldwide basketball superstars Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Kyle Lowry, Jimmy Butler, DeAndre Jordan, Harrison Barnes, DeMar DeRozan, Klay Thompson, DeMarcus Cousins, Paul George and Draymond Green also made it into the USA Basketball final roster.
Meanwhile, China are looking to have a decent finish in the 2016 Rio Olympics basketball competition. The Chinese squad earned a trip to Rio after winning the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship last year on home soil.
Former NBA player Yi Jianlian will have a big load on his shoulder as the main man of the team. 2016 NBA draftees Zhou Qi and Wang Zhelin are also players to watch along with savvy playmaker Guo Ailun.
China are targeting at least a quarter-final stint but winning in their opening game is a long shot. China took a 106-57 beating against USA in Los Angeles on July 24, which was followed by a 107-57 on July 26 in Oakland.
