Skipanon Brand Seafoods LLC from Warrenton, Oregon recently issued a voluntary recall involving all varieties of its Skipanon brand seafood canned products (in all sizes) as they may possibly be contaminated with a potentially deadly bacterium known as clostridium botulinum.

The products affected by the recall include Skipanon’s Albacore Tuna, Albacore Tuna Bellies, Smoked Albacore Tuna, Chinook Salmon, Smoked Chinook Salmon, Peppered Smoked Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, Sockeye Salmon, Smoked Sockeye Salmon, Fancy Steelhead, Smoked Steelhead, Peppered Smoked Steelhead and Smoked Sturgeon. Meanwhile, the 6 oz. Columbia River Sockeye Deluxed Handfilled cans labeled Oregon Ocean Seafoods is also part of the said recall.

Skipanon Brand Seafoods decided to issue the recall due to a lack of documentation as well as the possibility that some of its products may have been under-processed. The issue was actually discovered during an inspection conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Both the FDA and the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) have since, been informed of the recent recall.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the clostridium botulinum bacterium actually produces a rare nerve toxin that can cause botulism. Of the 145 cases of botulism reported in the US on average each year, approximately 15% are said to be foodborne.
