The story of ‘Benjamin Button’, the film about a man who had a rare genetic disorder, just got real in Bangladesh, when a woman gave birth to a baby who looked like an 80-year-old with a wrinkled face.
It was supposed to be an ordinary day in a maternity ward in a local hospital in Magura, Bangladesh until a baby was born who caught the attention of the hospital’s medical team. The newborn looked healthy at first glance, except that the boy looked like a senior, the Yahoo News reported.
‘Benjamin Button’ Got Real
Doctors call the boy’s condition as Progeria, a rare genetic disorder where the newborn child possesses the physical condition of a senior. The boy was born with some of the prominent features of a senior, including excessive wrinkles and rough skin.
But despite having a child born with an extremely rare condition, the couple Biswajit and wife Parul Patro, have nothing but words of appreciation for having the child.
“We can only thank God. There is no need to be unhappy about the appearance of my son. We will accept him the way he is. We are so happy to have a baby boy in the house. We have been getting a lot of visitors. Relatives, neighbours and even people from neighbouring villages have come to see our son,” the father was quoted as saying by the Yahoo News.
According to the Progeria Research Foundation (PRF) Progeria or Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome, in the medical field, is an extremely rare genetic disorder that affects only 1 in every 20 million individuals across the world.
The PRF also considered Progeria as a fatal condition affecting 350-400 individuals in 52 countries. It is believed to be caused by a mutation in the gene called LMNA, a gene that produces the lamin A protein.
Recent development in the field of Progeria research includes the ability to isolate the gene that causes Progeria.
