The possible spinoff of “Empire” TV series is delayed for now. The co-creator of the show, Lee Daniels, had said at the beginning of the year that a follow-up series of the show will definitely happen.
Rumors of a spinoff began when Vivica A. Fox, a guest star of “Empire,” was present in “Watch What Happens Live.”
Vivica will be playing Cookie’s elder sister on “Empire” season 2. She was asked about the spinoff by the host, Andy Cohen, “I’m feeling like you’re going to be in a few episodes, and then there’s going to be a spinoff starring you. Confirm or deny?” Fox replied that if there is one she will take on the opportunity.
When asked about the same thing, showrunner Ilene Chaiken mentioned, “Right now, we are focused on making the best season two of ‘Empire’ we can possibly make,” adding, “In our world, there may well be storylines and characters that we can spin off, but that’s not what we are focused on right now, and nothing official or concrete is happening with regards to it. We really just want to stay focused on what we’re doing.”
While the network and the showrunner confirmed that there is no “Empire” spinoff on the cards for the time being, it can be put in the fast track for 2016-17. Fox Television Group boss Dana Walden mentioned in a statement, “If there’s a character…that feels original enough, has enough momentum and enough of a storytelling engine, we will definitely look to spin ‘Empire’ off for next season.”
“Empire” season 2 is focusing on intense matters of the Lyon dynasty for the time being. The showrunners are not ready to move the attention of viewers to an extended series with the Lyon clan. However, the possibility is always there and it may happen in the future.
