Police Suspect Father In Killing Of 10-year-old Minnesota Boy
Police suspect Pierre Collins in killing his 10-year-old son Barway. Over the weekend, the body of the boy was recovered from the Mississippi River. He went missing for over a month and after deep investigation, he was found 10 feet from the river’s edge in Brooklyn Center. Police said on Sunday that Barway’s father is the prime suspect.
Crystal, Minnesota’s Police Chief Stephanie Revering said authorities have electronic evidence that proves Pierre Collins was in the vicinity when Barway disappeared a month ago. She did not clarify the type of electronic evidence that was used.
“This location is consistent with our knowledge of Pierre Collins’ activities on March 18 and he remains a primary suspect,” Revering said.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said they are investigating various angles of the killing. Without elaborating much, Revering said that based on the autopsy report from the medical examiner, the case is being viewed as a homicide.
Though evidences point towards Pierre, no arrest warrant has been issued. Police has seized his passport, and he was provided protection.
Pierre Collins said he is innocent. In an interview on March 25, he had said he was not at home when his son disappeared. He expressed his dismay for being considered as a prime suspect in his son’s killing.
“I’ve been working with the police just to bring my son home,” he said. “I will do whatever they want just so Barway can come home. I have nothing to do with Barway’s missing.”
The boy’s stepmother and Pierre’s wife, Yamah, also said that she and her husband are totally unaware as to who took the boy.
In 2011, Barway was emigrated from his home at Liberia, where his real mother lives, to stay with his father.
The boy was last seen outside his school compound on March 18. Video surveillance from his apartment complex shows he was just about to enter the school premises when he was called by someone he seemed to know. Without entering the school, he turned to the caller, the Associated Press reported.
Footage recorded at the school van shows that before getting down, Barway had said he saw his father and another man who was his “uncle.”
Revering confirmed that previous lie detector tests showed Pierre Collins was telling lies.
