What's This?

The two big names in console gaming Microsoft and SONY are at it again after both companies release their lineup of free games for September 2016. The PlayStation Plus free games and Xbox Live Games with Gold go head to head to see who has the better choice of games.

This month was supposed to be an easy win for Microsoft, with games such as Forza Horizon and even a brand new game Earthlock: Festival of Magic. However it has turned into an all out brawl after SONY launched its list that includes titles such as Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands.

According to Attack of the Fanboy, there are the usual pros and cons on both sides. Playstation Live has unveiled a longer list of free games. However, its rival has a trick up its sleeve.

Playstation Plus Free Games

  • Lords of the Fallen for PS4 – 68%
  • Journey for PS4 and PS3 – 92%
  • Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands for PS3 – 75%
  • Datura for PS3 – 57%
  • Badland for PS Vita, PS4, and PS3 – 76%
  • Amnesia: Memories for PS Vita – 72%

Xbox Live Games With Gold

  • Earthlock: Festival of Magic for Xbox One – No review, brand new
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China for Xbox One – 67%

Microsoft’s Backwards Compatibility program is making it so that all Xbox Live games can be played on the Xbox One. This not only makes classic titles playable on their latest-gen console but also includes improvements thanks to the advanced platform.

Sony’s roster features more recent games with the oldest being released in 2010 and the newest being released just last year. Microsoft’s roster, though including a title from 2008 also includes a brand new game.

The Xbox Live Games with Gold line-up also features higher-rated titles with an average of 77 percent rating on Metacritic. Compared to the PlayStation Plus free games average of 73 percent it seems that a quantity vs. quality match up.

All things considered, the software giant takes the gold with a better, fresher choice of games, both new and backwards compatibility titles. Sony’s line up, though generous, gives off the feeling of giving away leftover games from a yard sale.

In the end, whether it’s Playstation Plus free games or Xbox Live Games with Gold, gamers still come out on top. Free games are the best kind of games there are and giving away top rated titles can only be described as Christmas in September.
