The system is a centralized, automated, command-and-control and weapons control that was designed as a total weapon system for detection to kill. It protects the nation from ballistic missiles, whether short-range, long-range or intercontinental missiles. The latter has the capacity to carry nuclear weapons.
The awarding of the contract incidentally came after Russia’s successful test of its “doomsday” command center. Such center is designed to protect significant communication system when a nuclear war erupts. It is also designed to protect the president when a nuclear attack happened.
The Aegis Weapon System is equipped with the SPY-1 radar that is capable of advanced surveillance, anti-air warfare and missile defense capabilities. Destroyers equipped with the Aegis use hit-to-kill technology to intercept and destroy short and medium-range ballistic missiles. Furthermore, the Aegis system provides ships surveillance and tracking of intercontinental ballistic missiles, according to Lockheed Martin.
Intercontinental ballistic missile or ICBM is a guided ballistic missile with a minimum range of more than 5,500 kilometers. It is primarily designed for nuclear weapons delivery. It can also carry warheads of both chemical and biological weapons.
“Regardless of the origin of a conflict, a country may involve the entire world simply by threatening to spread the war with an ICBM,” according to the Federation of American Scientists. “The most sensible warhead for an ICBM to carry is a nuclear weapon,” the federation wrote.
The contract awarded for Lockheed Martin on Dec. 1 provides for “Aegis shipboard integration engineering, Aegis test team support, Aegis modernization team engineering support, ballistic missile defense test team support and AWS element assessments,” according to the Pentagon announcement. “This contract will cover the AWS ship integration and test efforts for five new construction DDG 51 class ships, and the major modernization of five DDG 51 class ships. It will additionally cover the integrated combat system modifications and upgrades for all current ships with all AWS baselines up to and including ACB 12,” the Pentagon said in its statement.
There had been warnings of an impending nuclear war between NATO-U.S. versus Russia. The former Soviet Union was provoked once again when NATO officially invited Montenegro to join the Alliance.
The prospect of World War 3 is also growing louder with Turkey’s downing of the Russian jet and Russia vowing revenge. The U.S. supports Turkey. The two nations are long-time ally both with NATO and the coalition conducting airstrikes against the ISIS.
