It’s just a matter of days before Oscars 2016 comments. After the Oscars 2016 nominations were announced, #OscarsSoWhite trended due to entertainers of color protesting how none of their society’s members were given the privilege in the acting categories despite successful movies last year. Given that, here are the list of the no-shows and where they’re going this February 28, 2016.
It was just last month when Jada Pinkett-Smith voiced out concerns about Oscars 2016 nominations and how her husband, who according to her, did a tremendous job in his latest film “Concussion.”
She previously stated, “It is a time that people of color recognize how much power, influence that we have amassed, that we no longer need to ask to be invited anywhere?” After her statement, she then declared that she and her husband will not be attending the event. They would be attending the #JUSTICEFORFLINT event, reports Washington Post. Among the people of color joining the said event are Ava Duvernay, Hannibal Buress, and Ryan Coogler.
Coogler, director of “Creed,” decided to put his efforts on supporting a campaign to promote awareness and raise funds for the Flint water crisis victims. A lead actor in his film, the legendary Sylvester Stallone, also wished to boycott the Oscars 2016 event. However, Coogler pushed him to attend, so he will.
Other than them, Spike Lee will also not be attending. He raised his views about the Oscars 2016 nominations’ “lack of diversity issue” by posting on Instagram with the caption, “I will not be attending the Oscar Ceremony this coming February. We cannot support it and mean no disrespect to my friends, host Chris Rock and producer Reggie Hudlin, president Isaacs, and the Academy. But, how is it possible for the 2nd consecutive year all 20 contenders under the actor category are white?” He is said to watch the Knicks game on the night of the ceremony.
Following suit, April Reign would also be not attending. However, she did reveal that she will be live-tweeting come awards night.
In other news, Fox News reports that Jennifer Lawrence may not receive an Oscar this year not because she can’t act, but because of her role in “Joy.” This possibility may occur because due to the film’s technical background about business, a source stated that Hollywood may not be able to get the movie right and warrant Lawrence the award for Best Actress.
