‘Orange Is The New Black’ Star Lea DeLaria Feels The Show Has Changed Her Life
“Orange is the New Black” may be one of the most viewed comedy series on TV. According to Lea DeLaria, who plays Carrie “Big Boo” Black on the show, the whole series has changed her life.
A stand-up comedian by profession, Lea was little known till 2012 due to some TV credits. But “Orange is the New Black” made her a household name by giving her a character that stands strong among the inmates of the show.
The 57-year-old star said, “I never had a day job. I enjoyed my climb to the middle. I enjoyed my life then,” adding, “Nowhere in my wildest dreams did I think I would become a TV star. A household name. At this stage in my life.”
When Lea signed the contract with the show in 2013, she did not know that she will become a household name for being a womanizer with buzz cut hair and tattoos that are actually quite real. Her signature black frame glasses and Saint Harridan suits gave her the much-needed identity.
As DeLaria puts it, “The biggest difference in my life now is if I walk out of my apartment I get asked by a thousand people to get their picture taken with me,” she also mentioned, “Young girls, guys. Straight. Gay. Whatever. Before, people would spit in my face and call me a dyke.”
She found it absolutely amazing to have so much attention in her hometown. She was in a bar in Columbia where people were quite excited to find the star and take pictures with her. “It’s completely changed my life; ‘Orange’ has made an impact on every gay person’s life, I think.”
“Orange is the New Black” Season 4 is currently under production and it will introduce a bunch of new characters. However, Lia will continue to entertain and annoy viewers with her tantrums.
