Noor Tagouri has become the first model in hijab to feature on the cover of Playboy for its October edition. When we think of Playboy the fact that comes to the mind is scantily clad women.
So how does Tagouri fit in? The 22-year-old wears black jeans, Converse sneakers, leather jacket while he head is covered.
The American journalist, who works at Newsy appears as part of Playboy’s “Renegrade” series along with a sex activist, a comedian and a novelist. There were strong reactions from various quarters about Noor Tagouri.
Some critics praised the magazine to rope in a hijab-wearing model, while some others condemned the decision. The edition of Playboy highlights people who have risked even their lives to do what they love, CNN reports.
According to Independent, though Playboy rebranded itself in 2015, yet it has objectified women for 63 years. It raised questions about Tagouri who favors “modesty” in her dressing to be featured on the cover of Playboy.
The publication said that Tagouri as a young journalist has a career ahead of her, though she has been catapulted to recognition with the Playboy feature.
“I don’t read or pay attention to any of it. It’s just negative energy and unhealthy,” said Noor Tagouri to Playboy.
The young woman has 155k followers on Instagram, and 29.4k followers on Twitter. Based in Washington DC, Noor Tagouri is a first generation Libyan-American who grew up in Southern Maryland, according to Famous Birthdays.
A graduate in broadcast journalism and international development conflict management, she worked as an associate journalist for CBS Radio, a local news reporter for CTV News in DC.
Tagouri is also a motivational speaker and launched her own viral #letnoorshine campaign in 2012. She has also been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Network and has given a TEDx talk.
