Aqib Talib, one of the key members of Denver Broncos’ Super Bowl winning team, is reportedly on the trading block, and the Carolina Panthers have emerged as possible suitors, per sources.
The cornerback, a three-time Pro Bowler, earned a bad rep over the summer for accidentally shooting himself in the leg during a nightclub incident this summer. The Broncos front office wasn’t pleased with the incident.
Also, Talib has become expendable since the emergence of budding cornerback Bradley Roby, who at the ripe age of 24, is ready to assume a bigger role with the Broncos.
Aqib Talib available via trade?
On Saturday, ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported that the Broncos have made Talib available via trade.
However, Broncos general manager John Elway vehemently denied the rumor.
“False. [Talib’s] name was never brought up anywhere. We’ve heard nothing. We’re full speed ahead. It would be very disappointing if we heard something at this point in time,” Elway told reporters ahead of the team’s season opener against the Panthers on Thursday.
Despite Elway denying the rumor, several reports suggest that the Broncos would be best served to get rid of Talib, who missed the first 10 days of training camp and couldn’t practice with the Super Bowl champs until August 8.
When he returned to camp, Talib denied that his shooting incident was the reason for missing practice. “The situation is still under review, and we have to respect that process. I’m not going to talk about that right now, but I feel great.”

Why the Panthers?
According to this FanSided writer, the Panthers and Talib are a perfect match since the Super Bowl champions let go off Josh Norman during the summer.
“After letting Josh Norman go this summer, the Panthers are in dire need of an elite-level cornerback. For having a top-tier defense, the Panthers don’t have a single person that you could pick out of a grocery line — not even Pro Bowler Luke Keuchly,” opined the writer.
“Adding Talib would basically be like swapping out Norman for an older, slightly more unhinged version of himself. Norman had the ability to shut down a wideout as much as he did knock him the hell out. Talib has the same spunk and talent, and he could help the defense not miss a beat from making it to the Super Bowl,” added the report.
It’s still unlikely that the Broncos trade Aqib Talib anytime soon. However, he will be one name to watch out for as the trading deadline nears. For now, the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers prepare for the Super Bowl rematch on Thursday night.
