The Cleveland Browns might need to sign a quarterback in the coming weeks after Josh McCown went down with a shoulder injury. Will the Browns make a call to Johnny Manziel for a possible reunion?
The Browns were optimistic of their chances heading into the season after signing Robert Griffin III during the offseason. However, Griffin suffered a possible season-ending injury during their season opener.
With Griffin out with an injury, McCown took over and started against the Baltimore Ravens. However, the veteran quarterback also sustained an injury that could put him on the sidelines for weeks.
The injuries to Griffin and McCown fueled speculation that the Browns might consider renewing ties with Manziel. The Browns released the former Texas A&M standout during the offseason after another tumultuous year on and off the field for the Browns. Is it time for Cleveland to call Manziel and check if he is fit to play?
Brad Berreman of FanSided recently the discussed the possible Browns-Manziel reunion. While Berreman is not ruling out the possibility, he pointed out that signing Manziel does not make sense for the Browns.
“The chances aren’t very likely but not impossible,” Berreman wrote, referring to the Browns-Manziel reunion. “Manziel has natural talent that can be tapped into, but he’s a head case. The Browns had the opportunity to fit him into this Hue Jackson scheme and they passed.”
For his part, Manziel also admitted to TMZ that he is not expecting a call from the Browns. While he has already parted ways with his former team, the former Browns QB did not forget to wish his former team good luck in their remaining games this season.
The Browns, who lost to the Philadelphia Eagles and Ravens in their first two games, will go up against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. According to ESPN, rookie quarterback Cody Kessler will start in place of McCown against Miami. The young QB will be Cleveland’s 29th starting quarterback since 1999.
