Who would be the greatest gainer with Chip Kelly appointed as San Fransisco 49ers head coach? Kelly himself? No, it’s quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
While fans are excited over heavyweight Kelly’s appointment, Kaepernick is the happiest guy in the roster. The QB lost his job as a starter. Now, it’s a certainty that he would return. The biggest challenge Kelly faces for thriving at the 49ers is to find the right quarterback. And he has an easy option: to bring back Colin Kaepernick as starter.
Moreover, Kaepernick will also grab a higher salary package. He will be able to maintain his $126 million contract and earn a chunk of $100 million, which he could have missed had he been dropped from the side.
Kaepernick should soon become a pillar of Kelly’s read-option defense strategy. He almost clinched a Super Bowl title in 2012 with the 49ers. According Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Kaepernick has been the darling of coach Kelly, and wherever he moved, he tried to rope in the ace QB.
“As he plotted potential moves & his next NFL stop, Chip Kelly was trying to figure out how to trade for/sign Colin Kaepernick,” wrote Rapoport in his tweet.
The 49ers signed Kaepernick in a record $126 million, seven-year deal, of which $61 million is guaranteed. The figures raised a lot of eyebrows while the deal was ratified in 2014.
Add in Kaepernick’s value as a runner and he’s comfortably the best QB Kelly’s had since leaving Oregon.
