The Houston Texans released quarterback Ryan Mallett on Tuesday for missing a flight. The team decided to bank on free agent QB T.J. Yates.
Mallett not only appeared late on team meeting, but also missed the team’s chartered flight to South Florida. Mallett pointed out traffic congestion as the prime reason for his late arrival, but it wasn’t acceptable for team management.
This was the second time Mallett turned up late for a team activity. According to sources, coach Bill O’Brien was upset to such an extent on Monday, that he wanted to release Mallett right away, but the process was delayed as it took time to reach a team consensus.
Mallett also missed practice session after Brian Hoyer was named the starting QB for a match. Mallett told Texan general manager Rick Smith that he missed practice because he overslept that night.
Hoyer is now the only QB in Texans’ roster. Tom Savage is on injured reserve. The other guy Zac Dysert is on the practice squad. On Sunday’s Miami debacle, the Texans trailed 41-0 at half-time.
Mallett now becomes a free agent. It will be interesting to see after this release incident at Houston, whether any other team gives him a shot.
