Rex Ryan wasn’t enough for defending the Buffalo Bills. Instead, he hired Rob Ryan as assistant head coach for defense on Sunday. Rob Ryan is a former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator.
“I’m excited to have Rob join our staff, and I think he will be a great asset for our defense,” Rex Ryan said in a statement after hiring his brother. “He has a tremendous working knowledge of our schemes, and I look forward to his input.”
The Ryan brothers haven’t worked together since 1995, when they were in Arizona Cardinals under their father Buddy Ryan.
“On a personal note, it’s been a number of years since we have worked together,” Rex Ryan said on Sunday. “And so we are both really looking forward to this opportunity.”
The move came after Rex Ryan and other officials met with team owners Terry and Kim Pegula in Florida in a season-ending meeting.
Last season, Rex Ryan was assisted by Dennis Thurman as a defensive coordinator. Ryan, though, refused to comment on Thurman last week when asked.
“I don’t want to say anything until we talk to our coaches,” he said, avoiding the question.
