Netflix wants to make sure “you never miss a moment” when you tune in to any of its television series or films. That is why coming with up with a DIY project that is “part socks, part clever” was very important for them. Netflix says there are only four steps to make the perfect high-tech Netflix socks. But first, you’re going to need some materials and tools.
There are only eight things you need to make yourself a pair of Netflix socks. These are a pair of knit socks, an Arduino microcontroller, IR LEDs, LED indicator light, a 500 mAh battery, momentary button, accelerometer and a 12”x12” piece of felt. Netflix says they prefer the Arduino Pro Trinket for the microcontroller because it’s small, it has onboard USB and it’s easy to use.
To get started, choose your desired sock pattern to make your tech socks stand out. Netflix has some you can download, including Bloodline, BoJack Horseman, House of Cards and Chef’s Table. After you’ve decided on a pattern, follow the schematic Netflix has created here. And if you still find this project rather complicated, you can also follow the Netflix socks tutorial here.
