New York Knicks are still without a premier point guard. With the likes of Brandon Jennings and Ty Lawson out of favor with their respective teams, Knicks president Phil Jackson is ready to pull the trigger. According to latest NBA trade rumors, Lawson is almost certainly headed to New York.
Jennings is also a viable option. However, the Knicks are leaning towards Lawson due to Jennings’ recent history with injuries. Lawson and Carmelo Anthony enjoyed some success as teammates at Denver Nuggets. Perhaps, a reunion will help both players?
Lawson was traded to Houston Rockets during the off-season. However, that move has been a highly unsuccessful one with the point guard barely getting playing time. “The push to trade him (Ty Lawson) has been based on a poor basketball fit… Because Lawson has struggled to find a way to play off the ball with star James Harden on the floor, the organization and Lawson’s representatives are moving toward cutting short this experiment, league sources said.” Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports wrote in late December.
Calderon and Grant to Rockets?
Rockets have been seeking the best return for Lawson before completing the trade. The Knicks can offer Jose Calderon and rookie Jerian Grant to complete the transaction. The Rockets would get a mixture of experience and youth to pair with Patrick Beverley and James Harden in the backcourt.
Lawson would be a huge gamble for the Knicks, especially with his history of disciplinary issues. However, since he has a non-guaranteed contract for next season, the Knicks have nothing to lose.
Until last year, Lawson was one of the premier point guards in the league. He was averaging 15.2 points and 9.6 assists (third in the NBA) per game before the trade to Rockets. With the Knicks, Lawson would be instantly promoted to a starter’s role and could resurrect his career.
