The Los Angeles Lakers are in need of a proven veteran and Rudy Gay could be a sensible addition. But to do that, Mitch Kupchak will need to pull a few strings – meaning he may need to give up some assets.
Prime targets are likely to be D’Angelo Russell and/or Jordan Clarkson. Everyone knows that the Sacramento Kings needs dire revamping in the backcourt so getting either would be a big help to first-year head coach Dave Joerger’s cause.
Unfortunately, the Lakers aren’t likely to budge which means other players could be offered. How about Nick Young and/or Lou Williams?

Goodbye Nick Young, Lou Williams?
Of the two, the one less utilized is Young. He hasn’t been a shade of himself since Kobe Bryant’s return in 2014 and he has since fallen deeper in the rotation. The 31-year-old swingman has long been the subject of trade rumors but his price tag is something that has turned away several teams.
Adding Lou Williams could be overkill though a sensible move if the Lakers want to snag Gay. Williams did have his moments though Gay may be a better fit if they can pull it off.
The point here is that the Lakers will keep its young core (Jordan Clarkson, D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle, Larry Nance Jr. and rookie Brandon Ingram) at all cost.
First-year head coach Luke Walton will likely bat for that as he tries to employ the same stroke of genius he had with the Golden State Warriors last season.
Gay could be a fit in the presumed run-and-gun system of Walton, assuming he does go small. The 30-year-old small forward has proven to be a perfect in the open court so one can just imagine how he can fit in.
There is a chance as well he could be the next franchise player of the Lakers but commitment is key. If he is a good fit, the Lakers may have just found their new piece.
