Rudy Gay, the Sacramento Kings forward, is likely to be traded to the Houston Rockets before the start of the new season, per league sources.
While the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks have also been linked with Gay, the Rockets have emerged as the likeliest destination for the veteran forward, according to several reports.
Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders noted that the Rockets are willing to trade for Gay since the asking price isn’t too high. “League sources say while there are teams that have expressed interest in Gay – most notably the Houston Rockets – getting anything of real value back on what could be a one-year rental at Gay’s price tag is hard math to make work,” wrote Kyler.
Despite the Rockets signing Ryan Anderson in free agency, Matt Moore of CBS Sports opines that Gay would be an ideal fit in Mike D’Antoni’s system, especially at the 4 spot.
“The Rockets need a better option at power forward, and Gay’s versatility makes sense with Mike D’Antoni. Gay excelled, in a career resurgence, under George Karl’s fast-pace offense where he played smallball four. The Rockets need a boost in veteran scoring talent at forward, even with the addition of Ryan Anderson and Eric Gordon in free agency,” wrote Moore.

Rudy Gay prefers Miami?
It’s important to note that Gay is reportedly trying to force his way to South Beach, even though the Heat don’t have enough assets to make a trade work with the Sacramento Kings.
The Miami Herald reported a few weeks back: “According to an associate, the Heat is among teams that very much appeal to Sacramento forward Rudy Gay, who has been available in trades. But Miami likely lacks the tradable assets to acquire him.”
Since Gay has a player option next year, the team which acquires the forward would be taking up a one-year rental without any guarantee of a long term extension. Therefore, the Kings front office aren’t in a position to demand too many valuable assets in exchange for Gay.
