NBA Trade Rumors: Ricky Rubio On His Way Out After Timberwolves Select Kris Dunn?
Minnesota Timberwolves’ decision to select Providence point guard Kris Dunn in this year’s Rookie Draft has sparked NBA trade rumors, suggesting that the team might be looking to unload Ricky Rubio.Advertisement
Timberwolves head coach and president of basketball operations Tom Thibodeau specifically targeted Dunn to be the team’s point guard of the future. The draft choice has made Rubio an expendable relic from the team’s botched Kevin Love era.
What the Timberwolves need right now is outside shooting and perimeter defense, which is the main reason why the Spanish playmaker is continuously being mentioned in NBA trade rumors. Rubio is known as a traditional point guard with exceptional passing ability. However, he is not much of a threat from beyond the arc and could be a liability on the defensive end of the floor.
Meanwhile, Dunn is a 6-foot-4 defensive ace with a 6-foot-9 wingspan, perfect for intercepting passing lanes and closing in on perimeter shooters. Twin Cities pointed out that the 22-year-old Connecticut native is the only backcourt player to win both Big East player of the year award and defensive player of the year award in the same season. With that being said, defense isn’t the only upside to Dunn’s game.
While he’s outside shooting could still improve, his ball-handling prowess and slashing ability makes him a dangerous playmaker and scorer. In his senior year at providence, Dunn averaged 16.4 points, 6.3 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 2.5 steals, as per Los Angeles Times.
Dunn has the skills to be the perfect complement to Minnesota’s prized big man Karl-Anthony Towns. His floor generalship and scoring ability will also free up rising stars Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine on the perimeter.
As for Rubio, all signs point to him being shipped in exchange for younger and more dynamic players this offseason. Veteran NBA writer Adrian Wojnarowski posted on Twitter that Minnesota has already started shopping the 25-year-old Spaniard this week.
Basketball pundits have also outed their astute predictions on where Rubio will end up next season. As per Fan Sided, the list of most viable teams include the Chicago Bulls, the Brooklyn Nets, the Philadelphia 76ers, the Memphis Grizzlies and the Milwaukee Bucks.
