Tobias Harris, the Orlando Magic forward, could be shipped ahead of the February 18 deadline, according to latest NBA trade rumors.
ESPN’s Mark Stein tweeted yesterday: “Monday morning trade scuttle: Orlando isn’t outright shopping Tobias Harris, but word is the Magic aren’t discouraging offers for him either.”
The question: should the Lakers pursue Harris? The Lakers could use a quality talent at the 3 spot – which has been a major weakness for several years. This season, Kobe Bryant and rookie Anthony Brown have fulfilled small forward duties. Clearly, it isn’t a favorable situation.
During the off-season, several insiders felt that Lakers should pursue Harris with a max offer sheet. However, with Orlando determined to match all offer sheets, the Lakers withdrew in their pursuit. Harris would eventually sign a four-year, $62 million deal, which would prove to be bargain come next season when the NBA Salary Cap skyrockets even further.
Hypothetical trade scenario..
Here is an option that could bode well for both teams. The Lakers send Lou Williams, Brandon Bass and Larry Nance Jr. to the Magic for Tobias Harris. ESPN Trade Machine approves.
The Magic have won only 2 games for the entirety of 2016. Bass and Williams are locker room leaders who will help the young Magic squad in more ways than one. Also, Nance Jr. has a very bright future ahead of him and will add a lot of depth to the Magic’s front line.
Realistically, Orlando would demand for one of Lakers’ three prized talents – Julius Randle, D’Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson. It’s highly unlikely that Lakers would agree to trade either of them for Harris, who has shown patches of an all-star calibre player but also shows glimpses of inconsistency.
This season, Harris is averaging 13.7 points and 7 rebounds. It is a disappointing stat line for a player who averaged 17.1 points and 6.3 rebounds last season. Due to this decline, the Magic realize that Harris’ trade value has dipped considerably.
